As with any development team, we are constantly looking for better tools to do our jobs. Personally, I have messed with Flex for a while but never really had the inspiration to create anything with it. That changed recently when we began development on a new e-commerce platform for Jacobson Floral a national floral goods wholesaler. More »

Saturday was the date of the Boom! Gala and Exhibition at the Mint Museum here in Charlotte. The show is alternately hosted each year by the Charlotte and Raleigh AIGA chapters, and this year accepted over 500 entries from all over the Carolinas. We are proud to announce that Mode had 6 pieces selected of the 96 in the show, and ended up taking home three gold, one silver, one bronze, and one merit award! The calibre of work across all the entries was extremely high, so we are honored to have received these recognitions. More »

We’re excited to announce that we’ve begun a comprehensive rebrand for Orlando-based QAS. Recognized by Inc. magazine four consecutive years as one of the fastest growing private companies in America, QAS is concentrated on new and evolving medical diagnostic technology for the consumer and physician markets. MODE will be working closely with the team at QAS to develop key collateral and visual standards across all mediums including printed collateral, advertising and interactive initiatives.
Based on the early success of the rebrand we’ve also been tapped to develop the 2008 annual report for QAS’s parent company, Inverness Medical Innovations. Headquartered in Boston, MA with 7500 employees worldwide and 1.6 billion in revenue, Inverness is a global leader in rapid diagnostic products. Inverness Medical Innovations has major research & development and operational centers in the US, UK, Germany and Israel, and manufacturing sites in the UK, China, Japan and the US.

If you live in the Southeast you’ve no doubt heard of a pizza place with a cult-like following called “Mellow Mushroom”. It turns out that what you thought was your local pizza joint is actually an Atlanta-based restaurant franchise with 80 plus locations scattered throughout the country, reaching as far West as Arizona. The trick is that each location is so amazingly localized and full of tremendous culture it always feels home grown.
MODE is excited to announce that we’ve been officially selected as the interactive partner to create the new Mellow Mushroom online experience. We’re honored to be collaborating with our new friends at Markham Unlimited in Miami, FL, who have been hard at work as Mellow Mushroom’s lead agency developing fantastic branding initiatives for the past year.
Keep a lookout for the new MellowMushroom.com and associated interactive campaigns in Summer of 2009.
…now if we can only convince them to re-open a location in Charlotte.

Our client The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Andreas Bechtler, and Charlotte’s Cultural Campus is in the international spotlight in this month’s issue of Apollo Magazine. The London-based magazine’s feature story looks at the Bechtler Family, the collection and The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art which the magazine refers to as “part of a new cultural centre driven by public-private leadership that could be a blueprint for cities around the world.”

Obscured by the Mint Museum’s Warhol exhibit is a showing of a different flavor, grandiose in its own right. The ‘Scene in America: A Contemporary Look at the Black Male Image’ is a collection of work of various artists who focus on concepts of racial identity.
The highlight of the exhibition [to me] is the artist Kehinde Wiley, whose ‘Philip the Fair’ larger than life piece marries the visual rhetoric of European classicism with representations of contemporary urban, black and brown male. It is a hint of ethnographic aesthetic that I too echo in my photographic work.

To celebrate Kelly’s 2nd Anniversary at MODE (or his 2nd M-irthday) we need to do something extra special–after all he’s the Director of Party Planning. We needed to do something big, something elaborate, something to really show him just how much we care. Something that we would all be talking about for the weeks to follow. Something like the time we filled Tyler’s work space with 200+ multi-colored balloons, for his birthday. A cake just wouldn’t do. It would take; 6 rolls of striped wrapping paper, 3 rolls of tape, a handful of unnamed individuals and a web cam to record the reveal, to really make it memorable.
Happy M-irthday Buddy!

The office is buzzing with excitement over MODE’s big move across town, myself included. Talk of 10-foot glass walls, more individualized workspaces and a never-before-had break room complete with a full size refrigerator has the team anxious to step foot into the new building. While every one of the improvements tickles my fancy, I am most excited about all the new workspaces to choose from, and the possibility of having one that I can call my own, as I have not had that luxury at our current office. I live a nomadic lifestyle here in the office, changing desks every so often based on needs. More »

Let’s face it folks, the days of providing a singular fixed resolution website are soon to be over. With the onslaught of web capable phones hitting the market there has been a surge in mobile web browsing. What does this have to do with your company you might ask? Your beautifully designed website most likely degrades into a mass of text and unstructured content when viewed through a mobile web browser. As one might imagine this is very unattractive to potential clients and customers. They expect your site to be a reflection of your company’s standards and legitimacy. More »

Something that has fascinated me with the evolution of the web have been the ever changing methods in which users are able to describe content on the web. The idea behind describing content is a rather simple one. You can take an image, sound or video and use words to describe it. More »

Everybody at Mode already knows me as a freak for live music, (even if they still seem shocked when I tell them I went to two concerts in one night, or that I risked my life by traveling all over Florida and Georgia with 6 complete strangers to see multiple shows on the same tour), but my last concert experience really warrants a post from a visual and interactive standpoint. It also doesn’t hurt that I got a few decent pictures. The “Lights in the Sky” tour ups the ante for a band known for its constantly re-invented live aesthetic: Nine Inch Nails. Very few musicians are so invested in the visual side of their band that they’ll hire a full-time art director, or label every track on a 4-disc instrumental album with photos instead of titles. Sprint just launched a new site to promote its mobile capabilities called “Sprint NOW“. In addition to a well designed interface and animations, it’s functionally deep.
