Every year Winthrop University’s Graphic Design and Illustration Seniors put on an event to showcase their brand spankin’ new portfolios of work to friends, family, the design community and anyone else that might be interested. I look forward to this event every spring since I, too, was once one of these enthusiastic seniors ready to show off my work to anyone who would look. It’s exciting to see, not only the portfolios of each student, but also how each class brands and advertises their show.
You should check out the website for this year’s show simply titled ‘Illustration & Graphic Design Show.’ The event will be held on Friday, April 16th, 2010 at the Design Resource Center at 1930 Camden Rd. Charlotte, NC 28203. The students put a lot of work into these shows (believe me, I know), so come out and support Winthrop’s Visual Communication Design Seniors, I will be!

The January 2nd opening of the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art brought a buzz to the city of Charlotte as the number of visitors topped 5,000 in just 5 hours. The opening was exciting to all for many reasons, but especially exciting to everyone here at MODE. We have had the opportunity to work with the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art for more than 18 months, designing everything from the visual identity to the ticket counter digital displays, to the signage seen throughout the building. During the design phase of the new Mellow Mushroom website, a very cool opportunity presented itself: I had a chance to create my first typeface, BadManners Sans. The name references the quirky style of the face, but is also one of my many nicknames here at MODE. Don’t ask how I got the nickname “BadManners,” its a long story… More »

You know you’re hitting it big when your studio mates pull their money together to gift you commemorative bling, and not just any bling — a golden Georgé timepiece (Walmart exclusive). In my over three years at MODE, I’ve cried, I’ve laughed, I’ve eaten at Lang Van. Being tricked into working here didn’t turn out to be such a bad thing after all. Thank you for tolerating my peculiarities, keeping me off the streets and paying me enough to feed myself and my toy poodle.
Thank you MODE, thank you Georgé. I’ve made it.

July has been an exciting month for us here at MODE, earlier this month we celebrated the launch of the redesigned Mellow Mushroom website. We planned some low-key festivities around the studio and we knew our friends from Mellow Mushroom were going to join us in Charlotte for the launch, we were quite surprised however, to find that they had transported a mobile oven from their headquarters in Atlanta and were set up to bake pizzas in our parking lot. As with any development team, we are constantly looking for better tools to do our jobs. Personally, I have messed with Flex for a while but never really had the inspiration to create anything with it. That changed recently when we began development on a new e-commerce platform for Jacobson Floral a national floral goods wholesaler. More »

We are proud to announce that Mode had 6 pieces selected of the 96 in the show, and ended up taking home three gold, one silver, one bronze, and one merit award! The calibre of work across all the entries was extremely high, so we are honored to have received these recognitions. More »

If you live in the Southeast you’ve no doubt heard of a pizza place with a cult-like following called “Mellow Mushroom”. It turns out that what you thought was your local pizza joint is actually an Atlanta-based restaurant franchise with 80 plus locations scattered throughout the country, reaching as far West as Arizona. The trick is that each location is so amazingly localized and full of tremendous culture it always feels home grown.
MODE is excited to announce that we’ve been officially selected as the interactive partner to create the new Mellow Mushroom online experience. We’re honored to be collaborating with our new friends at Markham Unlimited in Miami, FL, who have been hard at work as Mellow Mushroom’s lead agency developing fantastic branding initiatives for the past year.
Keep a lookout for the new MellowMushroom.com and associated interactive campaigns in Summer of 2009.
…now if we can only convince them to re-open a location in Charlotte.

Our client The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Andreas Bechtler, and Charlotte’s Cultural Campus is in the international spotlight in this month’s issue of Apollo Magazine. The London-based magazine’s feature story looks at the Bechtler Family, the collection and The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art which the magazine refers to as “part of a new cultural centre driven by public-private leadership that could be a blueprint for cities around the world.”

Obscured by the Mint Museum’s Warhol exhibit is a showing of a different flavor, grandiose in its own right. The ‘Scene in America: A Contemporary Look at the Black Male Image’ is a collection of work of various artists who focus on concepts of racial identity.
The highlight of the exhibition [to me] is the artist Kehinde Wiley, whose ‘Philip the Fair’ larger than life piece marries the visual rhetoric of European classicism with representations of contemporary urban, black and brown male. It is a hint of ethnographic aesthetic that I too echo in my photographic work.
