During the design phase of the new Mellow Mushroom website, a very cool opportunity presented itself: I had a chance to create my first typeface, BadManners Sans. The name references the quirky style of the face, but is also one of my many nicknames here at MODE. Don’t ask how I got the nickname “BadManners,” its a long story…

Initially, the face was just a few letters I drew for one of the creative directions presented. With the selection of that direction, and the desire to prominently feature BadManners throughout the site, the handful of letters needed to expand into a complete set of characters. I drew out all the characters by hand, and once in vector format, each letter was individually manipulated, creating a genuine, hand-drawn typeface that reinforces the authenticity and individuality of the Mellow Mushroom brand.

One of my favorite characteristics about BadManners is the alternates. There are two complete sets of letters to choose from, so when two of the same letter appear next to one another, there is another version of the letter available, making BadManners appear to be hand-rendered rather than typeset.
