July has been an exciting month for us here at MODE, earlier this month we celebrated the launch of the redesigned Mellow Mushroom website. We planned some low-key festivities around the studio and we knew our friends from Mellow Mushroom were going to join us in Charlotte for the launch, we were quite surprised however, to find that they had transported a mobile oven from their headquarters in Atlanta and were set up to bake pizzas in our parking lot. As with any development team, we are constantly looking for better tools to do our jobs. Personally, I have messed with Flex for a while but never really had the inspiration to create anything with it. That changed recently when we began development on a new e-commerce platform for Jacobson Floral a national floral goods wholesaler. More »

UNC Charlotte has embraced a bold new direction in creating the College of Arts + Architecture combining Architecture, Art & Art History, Dance, Music, and Theatre disciplines to collaborate, expand programs, reach new audiences, research, and develop a new generation of leaders. We’re proud to announce that MODE has been selected to develop a comprehensive branding initiative for the newly formed college. We are excited to work with UNC Charlotte COA+A to capture and communicate the collaborative spirit and culture that has developed through the combination of college’s varied disciplines. We are currently in the midst of an extensive exploration and planning process that will result in a comprehensive brand package including visual identity, printed collateral, website, mobile and social media tools scheduled for roll out in time for the 2009-2010 Academic Year.

If you live in the Southeast you’ve no doubt heard of a pizza place with a cult-like following called “Mellow Mushroom”. It turns out that what you thought was your local pizza joint is actually an Atlanta-based restaurant franchise with 80 plus locations scattered throughout the country, reaching as far West as Arizona. The trick is that each location is so amazingly localized and full of tremendous culture it always feels home grown.
MODE is excited to announce that we’ve been officially selected as the interactive partner to create the new Mellow Mushroom online experience. We’re honored to be collaborating with our new friends at Markham Unlimited in Miami, FL, who have been hard at work as Mellow Mushroom’s lead agency developing fantastic branding initiatives for the past year.
Keep a lookout for the new MellowMushroom.com and associated interactive campaigns in Summer of 2009.
…now if we can only convince them to re-open a location in Charlotte.

Let’s face it folks, the days of providing a singular fixed resolution website are soon to be over. With the onslaught of web capable phones hitting the market there has been a surge in mobile web browsing. What does this have to do with your company you might ask? Your beautifully designed website most likely degrades into a mass of text and unstructured content when viewed through a mobile web browser. As one might imagine this is very unattractive to potential clients and customers. They expect your site to be a reflection of your company’s standards and legitimacy. More »

Sprint just launched a new site to promote its mobile capabilities called “Sprint NOW“. In addition to a well designed interface and animations, it’s functionally deep. It’s essentially a dashboard full of really interesting and sometimes nonsensical meta type information from Doggy Daycare live video feeds to “Top Words Being Used Online”. More »

At this point, it has been about eight months since Adobe released the 1.0 version of Adobe AIR. Since that time, there have been several early adopters of this product but the question still remains, “What is Adobe AIR?” More »

As MODE’s Interactive Director I’m constantly looking to extend our offerings beyond traditional web media into other channels such as desktop applications, interactive kiosks, and in the last year, mobile. At MODE, we look at mobile as another avenue that our clients’ brand can use to reach its target audience. More »

I stumbled upon (you catch that one?) a gem the other day. There’s going to be an event targeted towards the SQL/developer community in Charlottesville, VA on November 14th-16th. It’s dubbed OpenSQLCamp and you can learn more about it here. What’s the big deal you might ask? It’s free! Yes, that’s right, this baby is entirely 100 percent free of charge. You might be wondering how such a conference could be conducted free of charge in a day in age when conferences run for $1000 and up. My response? It’s an unconference. More »
